Comment choisir son équipement de soccer

How to choose your soccer equipment

Two watchwords: good fit, good stretch!

The goal when choosing soccer apparel is that it allows for the best possible range of motion. To do this, it is best to opt for a fairly fitted cut and materials suitable for the practice of a sport such as soccer. For cleats, the right fit is also a big factor as it will allow for better ball handling. We will then talk about socks, shin guards and the ball itself! If you're in the goalkeeper role, you'll also need to think about gloves.

Just two shoes and a ball?

While soccer is a relatively accessible and affordable sport in terms of purchasing equipment, it would be misguided to underestimate the importance of good all-round equipment.

Characteristics of a good soccer jersey

The soccer jersey is the jersey worn by players and individuals practicing this sport. The dri-fit fabric has sweat-wicking, quick-drying and breathable technology. On the other hand, some brands add antibacterial and anti-odor technologies, which make the garment more durable and above all more pleasant to wear during practice or a soccer match.

Choose your soccer shorts

Type of fabrics

The shorts, in the same line as the jersey, must also be stretchy to allow you to cross the ground with ease. An elastic at the waist or a drawstring will be effective in keeping it in place, even during rapid or extreme movements. Here too, and as much as for the soccer jersey, opting for a material equipped with dri-fit technology is a winner. The shorts will therefore be equipped with breathable textile technology that keeps you dry.

Watch out for pockets

Pockets are not recommended, whatever your level of soccer practice, because they represent a probable danger of a finger or hand that could catch on inadvertently.

The right soccer shoes

Before talking about my materials, the sole and the laces, essential components of a sports shoe, it is important to specify that in order to avoid injuries to the feet and ankles, it is important to choose the size that will fit your foot perfectly.

Material

Spike models or cleated shoes can be made of PVC, synthetic leather or even leather. Leather models are slightly more expensive but last longer. Small note however: leather soccer shoes will tend to soften, so remember to take them very well adjusted when buying in store.

Sole

Where do you play soccer? On a synthetic surface, in an indoor gymnasium or on the grass? The sole must be chosen according to the ground, so the risk of injury will be limited.

Here are some tips:

  • Soccer indoors or in the gym = look for a good grip
  • Outdoor soccer = cleats, the characteristics of which may vary depending on the conditions
  • Both = multi-surface cleats are your best allies!

In any case, refer to the sales staff in store, they will be able to guide you.

Lacets

There are several lacing options, some will be on top and some on the side. In any case, unless you practice professionally or wear a model of soccer shoe without laces, the important thing is to lace your shoes properly so that you feel comfortable and stable in them.

Don't forget the stockings!

Just like soccer jerseys and shorts, socks need to breathe! Aim for good breathability and, if your budget allows, a model with an elastic band in the middle of the foot. This will improve the support of your foot.

Shin pads

Shin guards, as their name suggests, are protective equipment for the shin that reduces the impact of blows received in this area. Its outer shell will be rigid and its interior flexible. Choosing the right size will significantly increase the perceived comfort of this soccer gear. Your position on the pitch will also influence your choice of shin guards. Thus, a goalkeeper may opt for a lightweight model offering minimal protection, but a defender should choose a model with additional protection.

Back to basics: the soccer ball!

The height according to the age of the players

Each size has its ball size! Here is a simple guide to making your balloon choice.

  • Size 3: for players under 8 years old
  • Size 4: for players between 8 and 12 years old
  • Size 5: for players aged 13 and over

Quality through the seams

The durability of the ball essentially depends on its seams. Inside or outside, the better quality seams will prevent the ball from deforming under impact.

The soccer bag to store your equipment

While there are a host of brands and ranges of soccer clothing and accessories, it will also be necessary to think about transporting it from point A to point B. A bag with several compartments will allow you to store shoes and clothing well, without having to dirt from these does not affect the rest of your equipment.
