THE Shawinigan cataracts are a junior hockey team part of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Based in Shawinigan, Quebec, the team was known as the Shawinigan Bruins until 1973, then the Shawinigan Dynamos from 1973 to 1978.

The team played its home games at the Aréna Jacques Plante until December 18, 2008. Since then, it has played at the Centre Gervais Auto de Shawinigan, opened the same year.

The name “Cataracts” does not refer to the eye disease, but rather to a large waterfall. In this context, he refers to “ Shawinigan Falls ”, which are considered cataracts. A team from the Quebec Senior Hockey League, the Shawinigan Falls Cataracts (1945-1953) and the Shawinigan Cataracts (1954-1958), played in Shawinigan. The latter won the playoffs during the 1954-1955 season.

In 2012, Shawinigan hosted the Memorial Cup tournament; the Cataractes win the trophy by beating the champion team of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, the London Knights, 2-1 in overtime.

In 2016, the Cataractes lost in the QMJHL final to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in five games. Captain Anthony Beauvillier is the leader of his team with 30 points in 21 games.

In 2022, the Cataractes won the President's Cup (QMJHL) by beating the Charlottetown Islanders in the final 4 games to 1 and qualified for the 2022 Memorial Cup.
